Privacy policy

Syllabo keeps your study data on your device. There are no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. If you create an online account, your username, name, email and a backup of your study data are stored with our database provider, Supabase, so you can sign in on another phone and add friends. When AI is turned on, what you send to AI marking or the tutor goes to Anthropic through our server.
Your account
Creating an account stores your name, email address, username and a salted hash of your password on this device only. We cannot see it, reset it or recover it. If you enable it, Face ID or Touch ID can be used to reset a forgotten password on the same device. Guest mode stores no identifying details. Deleting your account in the app removes it and all of its study data permanently.
Online accounts (optional)
An online account stores your name, email address and username with Supabase, and your password is handled by Supabase Authentication; we never see it in plain text. A backup of your study data (subjects, progress, buddy, preferences and saved questions) is kept with your account so it can be restored when you sign in. Friends see only the summary your privacy settings allow. Deleting your account in the app deletes it online and on your phone. Guest accounts stay on your device only.
Study reminders
Daily reminders are scheduled on your phone by iOS; nothing about them is sent to us. Turn them off or change their times in Settings › Reminders.
What stays on your device
- Your subjects, school units, notes, exams, saved-question folders and imported past-paper questions
- Mastery, question attempts, mistakes, sessions, XP, coins, streaks and your study buddy
- Your friends list, requests and privacy settings
- Appearance, typeface and Review-lock preferences, and the list of apps you chose to lock
- An API key you choose to enter for your own AI provider, kept in the iOS Keychain
Deleting the app removes all of it. There is no copy anywhere else.
AI marking and tutor
When you are signed in with an online account and allow AI, answer marking, diagram marking, examiner and essay feedback, Teach the buddy and the Tutor tab send your answer, drawing or message, the question and its mark scheme, and your first name, subject, level, current syllabus point and short mastery and recent-mistake summaries to Anthropic's Claude models through Syllabo's server (a Supabase Edge Function), over encrypted connections. Our server does not keep what you send; it records only how many AI requests your account made each day, to apply a daily allowance. Anthropic handles the data under its own privacy policy. The first time you use AI the app asks for your permission, and you can turn AI off at any time in Settings › AI marking and tutor. If you instead enter your own Claude or Gemini API key, the same data goes directly to that provider under its own terms (Anthropic or Google). With AI off, or without a connection, the offline tutor and meaning-based marking work on your device and nothing is sent.
Friends
Friends are added by username; with online accounts they can be on any phone. A friend only sees what you allow: activity, mastery and streak can each be hidden, and you can turn off discovery by username. Friends never see your mistakes, notes, answers or email address.
Microphone and speech
Teach-the-buddy mode can transcribe your voice using Apple's on-device or Apple-hosted speech recognition, only while you hold the microphone button. Audio is not stored by Syllabo.
What the app does not do
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No advertising or advertising identifiers
- No third-party trackers or SDKs
- No selling or sharing of personal information
- No servers holding your data unless you choose an online account
Children
The app is designed for IB Diploma students managing their own study. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; accounts exist only on the device.
Content and trademarks
"International Baccalaureate" and "IB" are trademarks of the International Baccalaureate Organization, which does not endorse this app. Curriculum content is an original summary; past papers are only included when you import ones you are licensed to use.
